THE CHEMSOF REFERENCE

Editorial Policy

ChemSOF is being developed to help readers understand chemical engineering calculations through tools, guides, and worked examples. This policy describes the editorial principles intended to guide the selection, preparation, review, and maintenance of those resources.

Our goal is to make technical information useful and understandable while giving readers the context they need to assess how it applies to their work.

What We Cover

ChemSOF focuses on chemical engineering calculations and related concepts. Subject areas may include heat transfer, fluid flow, material and energy balances, engineering units, thermodynamics, physical properties, and separation processes.

The site may also publish articles about spreadsheets, calculation methods, and process simulation where they help readers understand or apply an engineering concept. Coverage develops over time according to its relevance and the resources available to prepare and review it.

Editorial Principles

ChemSOF aims to prepare content that is:

  • Clear: Terms, variables, and steps should be explained for the intended audience.
  • Accurate: Technical statements, equations, and examples should be checked against appropriate sources.
  • Transparent: Assumptions, units, limitations, and sources should be identified where relevant.
  • Useful: Each resource should address a recognizable question or calculation.
  • Independent: Editorial judgments should be guided by the subject and readers’ needs.
  • Correctable: Readers should have a way to report errors and unclear information.

A calculation or explanation should be presented within its stated scope. Where a simplified method is used, readers should be able to understand the conditions and assumptions on which it depends.

Research and Sources

ChemSOF may consult textbooks, technical papers, reference databases, standards, software documentation, and other relevant materials. Sources should be assessed for their authority, context, date, and suitability for the point being made.

References should identify the material used and support the associated explanation. When sources differ, the article should consider whether they use different definitions, units, conditions, or assumptions. Uncertainty or unresolved differences should be explained where they matter to the reader.

ChemSOF aims to respect authorship and applicable permissions when using text, data, images, and other materials. A link to an external resource does not by itself imply an affiliation or endorsement.

Equations, Data, and Worked Examples

Technical content should define important variables and state the units and calculation basis. Worked examples should identify the problem, inputs, method, steps, and result. Assumptions and limitations should be included when they affect interpretation.

Property values, coefficients, and correlations should be considered in the context of their source and applicable conditions. A value used for an example may not apply to a different fluid, phase, temperature, or pressure.

Where practical, examples should be checked independently and written so readers can follow and reproduce the calculation using the stated inputs.

Calculator Content and Review

A calculator page should explain what the tool is intended to calculate and provide information about its inputs, outputs, method, and limits. Relevant references and examples can help readers assess the result.

Before release, a calculator should be reviewed and tested in a manner appropriate to its complexity. This may include comparison with suitable reference cases, unit checks, boundary cases, and tests for invalid input. The Calculation Development & Validation page describes the intended approach in more detail.

A person with knowledge appropriate to the subject should review technical material. ChemSOF should identify an author, reviewer, or review process only when the description is accurate. The presence of a name or date should not imply a qualification, certification, or independent review that did not occur.

Editorial Independence and Commercial Relationships

ChemSOF is intended to make editorial decisions independently. Topics and explanations should be chosen for their relevance to readers, the suitability of the material, and the quality of the supporting information.

If advertising, sponsorships, affiliate links, or other commercial relationships are introduced, they should be disclosed clearly where relevant. A commercial relationship should not determine the outcome of a technical explanation or prevent a correction.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

AI tools may assist with research preparation, writing, editing, software development, or other tasks. AI output requires human assessment and should not be treated as a verified source on its own.

The people responsible for ChemSOF retain responsibility for editorial decisions and published material. The AI Policy describes the intended use and review of AI-assisted work.

Updates and Corrections

Technical information, references, software, and the site’s resources may change over time. Content may be updated to clarify an explanation, reflect a change, improve a tool, or correct an error.

When a substantive error is confirmed, ChemSOF aims to correct it and provide a dated note where appropriate. Potential errors affecting calculation results may require investigation, testing, and a notice or temporary removal while the issue is assessed.

Readers can report concerns through the Contact page. The Corrections Policy explains what information can help with a report and how different issues may be handled.

Responsible Use

ChemSOF resources are intended to support learning, calculation checks, and preliminary estimates within their stated scope. Readers should assess whether a method and its assumptions fit their circumstances, verify results independently, and follow applicable engineering review procedures before making decisions based on a calculation.
