THE CHEMSOF REFERENCE

AI Policy

ChemSOF may use artificial intelligence (AI) to support the development of its articles, calculation tools, and other resources. This policy explains the intended role of AI and the responsibilities that remain with the people preparing and reviewing the site’s content.

AI is an assistive tool. Responsibility for editorial decisions, published explanations, and calculator releases remains with the people operating ChemSOF.

How AI May Be Used

AI tools may assist with tasks such as:

  • Brainstorming topics, outlines, and examples.
  • Improving clarity, grammar, or organization.
  • Summarizing material for further investigation.
  • Suggesting explanations, diagrams, or alternative ways to present a concept.
  • Assisting with software code, test cases, and documentation.
  • Supporting accessibility work, such as drafting descriptions of visual content.

The use of AI depends on the task. A suggestion from an AI system is treated as material to investigate and review.

Human Review and Editorial Responsibility

Before publication, a person responsible for the content should review it for clarity, relevance, and accuracy. Technical material requires review appropriate to its subject and intended use.

Review includes checking whether explanations reflect the cited sources and whether examples state their inputs, units, assumptions, and limitations. A reviewer should have the knowledge needed to assess the material or seek appropriate technical assistance.

AI can produce plausible but incorrect statements, invented references, inconsistent units, or explanations that omit important conditions. Consequently, an AI-generated statement or citation is not accepted as verified solely because it appears in an AI response.

Sources, Equations, and Data

AI may help identify possible sources or summarize material, but it does not replace the underlying references. Before publication, the relevant source should be located and checked for its author, title, context, and applicability.

Equations, symbols, coefficients, property values, and numerical examples require particular care. Review should consider:

  • The original method or source and its stated assumptions.
  • Definitions of variables and consistency of units.
  • Validity ranges and operating conditions.
  • The suitability of property data for the calculation.
  • Whether worked-example results can be reproduced.

A source should not be cited unless it has been examined and supports the associated claim. Where data or other material is reused, applicable permissions and conditions should be considered.

AI-Assisted Calculator Development

AI may help draft or explain code, suggest test cases, or support documentation. Before a calculator is published or a change affecting results is released, the implementation should be reviewed and tested.

Testing should be appropriate to the tool and can include independent benchmark examples, checks for consistent results across units, boundary cases, invalid inputs, and checks on numerical behavior. The equations, data sources, model assumptions, and version should be documented where relevant.

A generated code sample or an apparently reasonable result is not, by itself, proof that a calculation is correct. Issues discovered after release should be investigated and addressed through the site’s correction process.

Images and Other Media

AI may be used to create or assist with illustrations and other visual materials. Visuals should be reviewed for relevance, misleading details, and text accuracy.

A generated illustration should not be presented as a photograph of a real event, person, facility, or piece of equipment when it is not one. Where an image’s origin is relevant to understanding it, ChemSOF should identify it as AI-generated or AI-assisted.

Privacy and Confidential Information

Personal, confidential, proprietary, or sensitive information should not be entered into an AI service unless its use is authorized and appropriate safeguards are in place. This includes private process data, customer information, and unpublished material supplied in confidence.

The handling of information submitted through ChemSOF depends on the features and services in use. Readers should consult the site’s Privacy Policy for information about data collection and processing.

Disclosure

ChemSOF may disclose substantial AI involvement when it helps readers understand how a resource was created. Routine assistance with editing or organization may not be identified separately on every page. Any disclosure should describe the actual use of AI rather than imply a review or process that did not occur.

Errors, Feedback, and Updates

If you notice a possible error in an article, calculation, source, or image, please contact ChemSOF through the Contact page. Include the page address, a description of the issue, and supporting information where available. For calculation issues, relevant inputs, units, and the result can help the reviewer investigate. Please avoid sending confidential process information.

ChemSOF may update this policy as its tools, editorial practices, or use of AI change.
