ChemSOF aims to provide clear and reliable chemical engineering calculations, worked examples, and supporting information. Errors can occur in explanations, data, software, or calculations. When a potential issue is identified, ChemSOF aims to review it and make an appropriate correction.
This policy explains how to report a problem and how different types of corrections may be handled.
What You Can Report
Please contact us if you notice a possible issue involving:
- An incorrect equation, calculation result, or worked example.
- A missing or misleading assumption or limit of applicability.
- An error in units, conversions, symbols, coefficients, or physical property data.
- An inaccurate statement, citation, attribution, or link.
- A calculator that fails, displays an unclear message, or behaves unexpectedly.
- A diagram, spreadsheet, or other resource that could be misleading.
Questions about unclear content and suggestions for improvement are also welcome.
How to Report an Error
Use the form on the Contact page and include the page title or URL, a description of the issue, and any source or explanation that may help us assess it.
For a calculator or worked example, please provide the input values and units, selected settings, the result displayed, and the result you expected if known. If the issue depends on a browser or device, those details may also help reproduce it.
Please use illustrative values where possible. Do not submit confidential plant data, proprietary process information, personal information, or other sensitive material unless you have a secure and authorized way to share it.
How Reports Are Reviewed
ChemSOF aims to assess reports according to their potential impact, the evidence available, and the resources required to investigate them. A report that could affect a calculation result or mislead readers about a method’s applicability may require particular attention.
A review may involve examining the published explanation, reproducing a reported result, checking units and assumptions, consulting the relevant source, and testing the affected calculation. When needed, the issue may be referred to a person with appropriate technical knowledge.
Some issues require further information or cannot be reproduced. Review times vary, and submitting a report does not guarantee an individual response or a particular outcome.
Corrections to Articles and Examples
When a substantive error is confirmed, ChemSOF aims to correct the affected material and add a dated note explaining the change where appropriate. Examples include an incorrect equation, a misleading technical claim, or a worked example with an incorrect result.
Minor changes that do not alter meaning, such as spelling, formatting, or a broken link, may be made without a separate correction notice. A broader update to clarify or expand a topic may be identified as an update rather than a correction.
A correction note should help readers understand what changed. When relevant, it may also describe which section or example was affected.
Calculator and Data Corrections
A potential error in a calculator may involve the equation, implementation, unit conversion, numerical method, property data, or description of the tool. An investigation should consider the conditions under which the issue occurs and whether it affects other resources.
Depending on the issue, ChemSOF may add a notice, correct the calculation or its documentation, or temporarily make the tool unavailable while it is assessed. A correction that changes results should be tested against appropriate reference cases before release.
Where relevant, a dated note or changelog entry should identify the affected calculator, the nature of the issue, the version or period affected if known, and the version or date of the correction. If the extent of the issue is uncertain, the notice should say so.
Readers who saved, exported, or otherwise used earlier results may need to recalculate them with the corrected version and independently assess their relevance to their work. ChemSOF may not be able to identify or contact every person who used an affected resource.
Sources, Attribution, and Third-Party Material
ChemSOF aims to correct inaccurate citations and attribution. Reports about material hosted by another organization may be reviewed for their effect on ChemSOF’s references, but changes to the third-party resource remain the responsibility of its publisher.
If a reported issue concerns permission to use material, please identify the resource and describe your relationship to the material or your concern so it can be assessed.
Corrections and Editorial Independence
Corrections should be based on the available evidence and the substance of the issue. A disagreement about interpretation does not automatically establish an error. If the evidence supports a clarification rather than a correction, the page may be updated to explain the context more clearly.
ChemSOF may update this policy as its editorial and calculator review processes develop.
